Sorry About The Flat Plane Confusion

I know there has been alot of discussion lately about the flat plane style of carving .. And is it this or is it that ? ... So Iam not going to try and beat this thing to death .. Ia'm just going to try and show you what I understand is considered flat plane and how I learned to do it .. It is nothing special ..and to some .. it may look like a unfinished way of carving .. But this is the way I understand it is similar .. Carvers like Harley Refsal are pro's at the style and maybe even he might disagree with my way's .. But By trying to watch his style .. I came up with something like this ..
The entire figure is done only with a knife and a small v tool .. I try to make the cut's create the character .. Please let me know what you think of this style ..

Gene, Flat plane, round plane, or straigt plane; your carvings are very special. I tend to agree with your explanation in this thread. I have taken one lesson in flat plane carving, but am still caught up some where in between flat plane and the more finished pieces. I don't know if this is a good place to be or not. I think I was influenced by Floyd Rhadigans carvings, and he describes his carving as a mix of Ozark and flat plane. I do have one flat plane carving, by Dave Kublank that is about 12 inches in height. Most other flat plane carvings I have seen tend to be smaller - much smaller. The "flat planes" in this 12" carving are much longer/bigger. But fall well within your explanation and description of Flat plane carving. Keep on doing what you do and keep on posting the photos.....Tom H

Gene~ These little carvings of yours are YOU,meaning its your style all together! I can tell your carvings from anyones! People that use patterns{which is ok} & carve the same thing even then theres a difference in all of the carvings.Your flat plane carvings take on your own personal distinctiveness! I admire you and your carvings! I just hate when someone or anyone criticzes the styles or the "abilities" of anyone thats trying to accomplish a carving or any type of art work when that person is doing his or her best. One of the most important traits in anything we do in carvings or in life its self,is being humble even thoug its not required. Take Mr. Enlow when he called me back,even him being a "Master" carver was humble. I enjoy and have learned alot being a member of this carving board from so many other carvers by just reading & seeing some of their art work but when someone trys with smart criticism of others, it also takes away from the one thats making thoses claim's and their craftmanship plus who they are. I enjoy your carvings and appreciate the help and advise from everyone on this great board of carvers! Keep up the great work,Gene!

what a great little carving,i don't care what style it is it's just a great carving,i'm not one to put a whole lot of labels on anything,if it works for you then do it,what difference does it make if it has flat planes or rounded edges,do what you enjoy,that's what it's all really about anyway,enjoying yourself with your craft,keep up the great work!!

Hi, Gene...I agree with Windsong.....it's your style and I, for one, LOVE it. Your characters have a lot of personality and just become so alive with the cuts you make. I've only attempted one lil' guy...a 2 incher...but he's rounded and not at all flat plane. I am becoming more and more interested in trying a few little fellas with the pattern you shared recently. I hope somehow I a'm helping in keeping this type of carving alive ..
