  • In Case Of Emergency!

Been wanting to get this finished and up just in case we happen to be away and something happens to the house. I had one up for our other pooch but since they're personalize with names I took it down when she passed away.

The wood is 4/4 basswood from southeast Tennessee. The woodburning was accomplished with a Colwood Detailer and the initial painting was made with water colors.I had one "unhappy" mistake in the finishing process. Before I started applying the water based poly I sealed it with Krylon Matte Fixative. However when I buffed it after the first poly coat with a paper bag to smooth the surface out in preparation of the second coat, the paint smuged. For the most part I was able to touch it up using thinned out acrylic on top of the first coat but I didn't try to do anymore buffing on the remaining coats for fear of further smugging.

Oh You , You are so talented and what a great project too. And for a real true reason, that is good. How do you do the lettering?
Thanks for sharing this one too, Eddy.

Always hoping for a nice slice that won't need sanding!

Making the lettering is the easiest part of the project. I decide how I want the sign to look. In this case it's just a bit larger than 8-1/2" x 11 so I picked out a font that's on my computer and laid out the lettering and graphic to fit a standard sheet of printer papper. Once printed out I afixed a sheet of graphite onto the piece of wood and then the sheet with the design on top of it. From there it's just tracing out design with a pencil. When all is removed the design is transfered to the wood.

Nice work, Eddy! Also, a very important item to have outside by the front door in case of emergency.
