  • Book Suggestion

After many years of carving, I've discovered pyrography. I picked up the Colwood Detailer and a few tips and have completed my first burning.

What I'm after is a book which discusses the different tips and particularly burning and shading techniques with good illustrations and as wide of a variety of styles as possible.

I would really appreciate any suggestions along those lines.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Book Suggestion

There are several books on Pyrography.

Two popular ones are "Pyrography Wookbook" A complete Guide to the Art of Woodburing by Sue Walters.

The other is "Great Book of Woodburning" by Lora S. Irish.

These are available thru Amazon or go to the Web site of the Authors.

The Book show a price of $19.95 each. Amazon might be a little less expensive. Beside if you ordered both you may be entitle to free shipping.

I am sure Amazon has other books on pyrography.

These two books covers what you asked about. The various tips to use. Discusses with illustration on shading. They also have project to work on.

I hope this helps. Good Luck, Bob

Sue Walters also has some DVDs out.

I think one is called Pyrography 101 and she does exactly what you asked for.

By the way, Bill, thanks for the suggestion on how to do the border on my wolf. I didn't go to the extreme you suggested, but I think it turned out great!

The wolf is actually the advanced project in Sue's book. I just added the deep relief.

          Re: Book Suggestion

Hi carver33! Glad to hear you have decided to try pyrography. Can't wait to see your first project. Directly above is a Sticky titled Acorn. It is a tutorial Susan (Lora S. Irish) posted after she received her Colwood Detailer. I think you will enjoy it and learn alot. There are two others there also.

I agree with Bob on the book suggestions. that would be my top two suggestions.

I like my books but I also like Hooked's suggestion on DVDs. I'm a visual learner. Well, I retain it better if I can actually see someone doing it, if someone shows me first. So I like the DVDs. Cheryl Dow also has an excellent 2 DVD set on her website, cherylddow.com. Sorry I don't know how to put a direct link in.

Good luck with your woodburning journey. I hope you have as much fun as I have on mine.

          Blessings,
          Tina

            Re: Book Suggestion

Thanks to all for the prompt responses. I've ordered "The Pyrography Workbook" and am looking at the Lora Irish "Great Book of Woodburning"

I've also run into a great deal of praise for "Introduction to Pyrography" by Daniel Wright - apparently a right ponder as it's mostly available in the U.K. Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of this book?

Will post picture of my first attempt as soon as I get a chance.

              Re: Book Suggestion

Hi, Bill. I've seen the book by Daniel Wright (available at my local Hobby Lobby store of all places.) It looks pretty good, but I have the Irish book and the Walters book and saw no need to get the Wright book until I've practiced all the different things I can from the books I have. The instruction you'll get will be similar in all of them, but Daniel Wright has a slightly different style of wood-burning, so might be interesting in the future for other ideas about where to go with your new art form. If I can figure how to resize my photo, I'll show you one of my burnings from the Irish instructions.

              Best of luck to you!

Okay - hope I got this resizing right. Here's a sample I did from the Lora S. Irish book.

you can find tons of books on ebay, and also, look up some gourd sights. they do lots of wood burning. you can also go to colwood detailers, and find lots of tips . also razor tip wood burners. they have things you can interchange tip pins, with the one you have. lots of stuff out there. Re: Book Suggestion

Evie's right-on about gourd art books having good pyrography information. Gourd Pyrography, by Jim Widess has a pyrographic pen chart at the back that I've found very helpful. It lists the main burner brands and gives the comparable pen tip identification for each of the brands. That way if I read that someone used a Colwood K tip, I know it is comparable to my Detail Master 1-A tip.

Also, be sure you've checked out the Winter Bird House Tutorial on this message board. It was done by Susan (Lora S.) Irish and gives a lot of good information.

And Nedra Denison, who's active on this forum when she's not recovering from hand injuries, has several books including Pyrography 101. I haven't had a chance to get it yet, but I really like her work I've seen and the advice she's given here.

Looking forward to seeing some of your work.
