I continue to work on this project sporadically. I have filled in some more detail on the Jaguar statue, and I have put the first layer of shading on the grass between the pyramid and the foreground items. I also worked on the treeline to the left.
I don't know if this is a new idea or someone has done this before. To get the white tree on the dark background, I resorted to a little cheating, (if you are a pyrography purist). I incised the tree trunk on the surface of the plywood using my smallest v-tool. Then when I burned the trees in the background, the tree trunk and branches stayed unburned, and the edges of the incision gave me sharp edges for the dark background shades.

Nice work, and no, I don't consider it cheating. I call it technique. I did the same thing for the lightening on my last dragon. It helps thing kind of pop out even tho they are in.
Thanks for the validation. I took a look at your picture gallery, and I must say I was very impressed. I hope I will be able to achieve the same level of quality.
I am sitting on the deck behind my daughter's house in Bristol, Ct. I have put some more time into this project, mostly on the stone walkway. Sorry about the picture quality; I took it with my camera phone.
Well, I have finally finished this project. All that remains is to put a finish on the wood and place it in a suitable frame. It will then be ready to give to my friends who hosted us at their condo in Cozumel as a thank you gift. I hope you all enjoyed my commentary on this. Sorry it took so long, but life intervened.
Vic,
Having been to Chichen Itza about five times over the past 20+ years (timeshare in Cancun) I have to say that the photo you took was as professional as I have seen. Not having people in the scene is almost impossible.
The wood burning is excellent and an exact match to your photo.
You did a great job!
It was worth the wait. I'm sure your friends will be delighted.
I especially like how the grain in the wood surrounds the pyramid. It adds to the overall mystical quality of the burning.
