Rodent control at it's finest... lol. They sure are beautiful birds , we usually have a few visit each year here on the coast. They seem to prefer the barren headlands....... probably reminds them of their arctic habitat.

They probably can see their prey better with the barren open fields.

I heard that Grandpa kept all birds from the barn (massive frame thing turn of the century) but allowed the Snowy Owl the run of the farm. Naturally it was a Horse drawn everything farm.

They do some north-south seasonal migrations in Canada.
Most common prey are the ubiquitous Ruffed Grouse.

If you live near farm country, go for a midnight drive = owl spotting.

Very nice Bird, love it and you can carve this one. I saw a barn Owl in a mag,the picture was about 2 inches high.. It is now carved one of my first birds and still in waiting ..Incidentally we live next to a Raptor reserve here and occasionally get a good Owll in our area , but a lot of Red Tail Hawks.
