I agree, as I have also found out when someone dislikes a piece then I stand back and stare at it for hours, or even days....sometimes I will agree with them and other times... I will say I love it the way it is. I will always go with my gut feeling. All of it is great for learning and moving forward. I went to art school ....now that was hardcore, they would throw our work into the trash can, rip it up, and even draw all over it....stating you either handle it or leave the art world. I remember students walking out and never coming back, I stuck in my upper lip and decided I was staying no matter what. I stayed, learn to stand, learn to dodge, and most of all take it all as a grain of salt. I want other opinions and tell me what can I do better, as often they can see what I can not. My work is not my hobby although, it is my greatest challenge and it is not often so-called fun, but hard work. I have had mean people's opinions, not here although, and I have had ones were
my mouth drop to the floor and left me muttering....but it is all in name of being creative. The belief we all have to agree is utter nonsense. The conversation starter it is ....

Life would be extremely boring if we all agreed on everything. Everyone has different likes, different opinions which makes it wide open for creating new things and change. Which I love about this forum....no such thing as right or wrong.

As Joe says - it's a personal preference thing. There is no right or wrong!!! If one person likes the antiquing and another doesn't, that's ok.

Merle, I guess it is a personal preference thing, I do like the look that you can obtain with antiquing.

Hi, Merle. I have to agree with Di - I prefer the one on the left also. To me, the antiqued one has too dark of lines in the grooves. I bought a decent pyrography machine to darken the grooves, and so far have not been able to like anything I used it on (all scrap just to try it...). The closest I've come to antiquing is to use a wash of burnt umber, then dry brush the white on top of it... Made hair look "salt and pepper" which is what I wanted...

Hi Di , I'm with you on the Color Book look , I like the Matt look also that is why I like to Antique my Carvings . The Shine is the Picture and not the piece . The thing I don't care for is the Eyes , they are to Big , must have been a bad day for my Eyes . Ha,Ha . Shoot you ? Nah , I always appreciate your Comments , Honest and Truthful . Good Hearing from you , haven't seen you ing for awhile , Hope everything Well . Merle

Honestly, I like the one on the left better.....a lot better. I do not like shine nor the stain which makes the Santa look like a color book project because of the strong dark lines. Of course, it may not look like this and it is just the photograph???. Just one person's opinion as I lean toward a matte look and small antique stain that does not stand out too much. Merle do not shoot me....LOL

Hi James , as I said before , Put on Poly U before Antiquing that way it can be removed if you don't like it . It gives me the look that I like , seems to bring the Piece to life . Merle
