  • New and improved ammonite fossil.....

I've been wanting to carve another ammonite, this time I chose to use figured maple with some spalting in it. I figured it would give me more of the fossil look I was after.

    I feel it did. C & C are welcome.

Ho-LEE TOOT, Frank! I thought that was the real thing! Rich color. The spalting only adds to the fossil concept. Good eye.
The animal looked kind of like a squid. Magnificent tribute to our world's past. 70 - 120 megayears BP.

Canada is 150 yrs old this year. Ammolite is the semi precious gemstone from Ammonite fossils chosen for this event.
The gem grade stuff is found in a single deposit, south of the city of Lethbridge, Alberta. Nowhere else on earth.

If that was a 6" wide fossil, gem grade, you're looking at a $megabuck.

"I figured", well you figure right! The wood grain really added to your fine job of carving.

This is very nice. I love the idea of carving "natural" subjects. The finish is perfect.
