  • Painted relief carving

I just completed this small relief carving of an Orca (killer whale) styled similar to the artwork of our Pacific North West Indians. It's my first detail painting on a carving for me, had fun.

    ½” Poplar- 5-1/2” x 8”

Hi Frank, Good clean Cuts and Detailing is Great. Painting really makes it stand out and brings out the Detailing. Good Job. Merle

                  Thanks all!
I'm really tickled with it myself. So tickled that I acquired my first piece of basswood to carve another one.

Make certain that you carve within any of the 4 carving styles of the PacNW. Mixed styles lack authenticity.

Basswood is east coast. I suggest that you should explore the values of Western Red Cedar and Yellow Cedar
so valued along our coast for carvings. Except for 'form-line', these woods don't lend themselves to detail.
Alder and birch are really nice woods.

                      It looks great,
I do not know absolutely anything about this style but I like it, it looks great.
Very clean lines, great design, and paint only highlights the wonderful work.

Finished with my latest project, it's a copy of a raven again in the style of our Pacific Northwest Indians. Its on a 10"x14" basswood country round from Walnut Hollow. It's my first carving using basswood and what a pleasant experience it was.

Really beuatifull! How did you finished the carving after painting? I see that the basswood didn' change much of colour, a problem I heve sometimes with certain varnishes or oilfinish. Is the relierf deep are did you only used a V-tool?

Very North Coast style (Haida, Tlingit, Tsimshian.) Classic red/white/black paint with a steady hand,
same centralized style eyes and really sharp trigons. Excellent left/right symmetry.
I'd hang that on my wall.
