another relief carving (of sorts)

I've been working with the wood lathe to get some practice hollowing out bowls, i started with a chunk of cherry that was headed to burn pile (some large cracks).

after turning the rough shape, the wife (she who must be obeyed) liked the shape and convinced me to fill the cracks and keep it. After filling the cracks and some sanding it seemed like it needed some carving (can't miss an opportunity to get out the carving tools). the celtic pattern is repeated 11times around the side of the bowl, and took more time than i care to admit.

Did you find it easier to carve it in place on the lathe (using the indexing head) or on a bench?

I think your Celtic pattern gives every viewer a sense of the time you have invested in the work.
Some are fast, some are tedious and a few never let on the time invested until you get into it, right?
I can guess but would you please tell us the height and diameter?

Hi Jim, this bowl 'turned out' a beauty. I like cherry wood.

the bowl is a little over 7 inches in diameter, about 6 inch tall.

Pallin: i do both lathe and bench carving. During the rough out of the pattern i chuck it in the lathe and lock the lathe in position, then i can work some of the rough outlines with both hands. After its roughed out i found it easier to work on the bench where i could freely rotate the work to achieve the smoothest cuts due to grain direction changes.

I can't take much credit for the finish, i came straight out of a spray can! High gloss poly. I generally use a wipe on friction polish on the lathe turnings, but that doesn't work very well with the carvings.
