First steps on the chipcarving-journey

Today is my second day at the Geisler-Moroder-carving-school in Elbigenalp. I wanted to start with chipcarving, so I did. The teacher-carver showed me 'how-to'...here, they do chipcarving with chisels. I started with the attemption of 'carving' a rosette...and struggled (a few others in the class did a lot better )

The second rosette I tried with a chipcarving-knife (struggled again...I never thought, I needed somuch force...)

Also yesterday a was not quite satisfied, when going to bed...

Another day, another chance...
didnot want to make another 'in the round', and started with little chips...and I am happy. I know it will be a long way to go, but I also couldnot play the piano after the first lesson...these are 'the results' of my second day.

Boy, you got more courage than I do. While it looks simple when you see a carving, to make look that way takes lots of skill & patience. It seems your moving along in the fight direction.

I admire your fortitude. I've tried chip carving one time and found that I didn't have the patience to make that many precise cuts. Keep up the good work!

Thanks...I am 'persistent'.... Today (wednesday), my third day.
Knowledge of the day: Keeping the right Angle is so difficult, some chips 'pop out' really nice, but most of them are not that good...so I will go on trying .

Great "START?" That is lQQking good sir. My hands just do not like the way I have to hold the knife. BUT I'll never quit!! HA. It is the second page that well?

Hi Chuck, now the fourth day...getting (a very little) better. Donot like the 'holding-stile' of the knife also. Nobody could show me the 'right way', because here they make the chipcarving with gouges. I know that many ways leads to Rom, but I want to learn it with a knife. But No, I am Not disappointed...what I take with me from this week is, that I want to learn this while I like it...that I know now, that I can go to the course in Vienna in Januar (because I like it), and that I surely will become better with the right technique (and practice ofcourse)...and that I donot want to make only chipcarving, but also others litte carvings and paintings.
To day the last day, will try to make some more chips popping out and then happy to go home again.

Yolli, I think it is absolutly beautiful work, very nice job on the chip carving, you said they use chisels when doing there chip carving?

Yes Mark, here in the 'schnitzschule' they say that the are sculptors (do not find the right translation) and do nothing with knives, only with chisels and gouges. I found a book from Christian Zeppetzauer, there are pictures how to.

Have you looked at the https://mychipcarving.com/ , this is where I have found the one that works for me. additionally I found that watching this man helps in "normal" carving too. And yours lOOks alot better than mine..

I notice that your chip carving practice boards have all the same alignment of the chips to the wood grain. As you progress to round patterns, each chip will have a different orientation to the grain, so you will have to adjust your approach.
