    I tried to do a basket weave on a cane, a couple of times actually, epic fail on all tries. Carving the curved surface proved to be more difficult than I had anticipated.
    so I went back to basics, a flat board (poplar in this case) and tried again.
    I'm guess I'm wondering if I'm on the right path with where the Carving is. I'm wondering also about rounding over the edges of the weave?

    Not sure but when I hear basket weave this is what comes to mind.

    When the corners are rounded think that is called a Celtic knot.

      Chawk;

      i've done a few walking sticks with basket weave that turned out ok. I do the layout with painters tape, then remove the "square" at the intersection. Next a stop cut to define the ribbon going under. Then taper the ribbon going under. Finally just shaping the edges.

      If I understand this correctly, you put down the spiral tape, draw the lines on both sides, remove the tape, then spiral tape the opposite direction, draw those lines, remove the tape, remove the "square" . Am I seeing that correctly? To me that looks like a great way to lay out the pattern.
