Grandson's first relief carving

We had our two oldest grandsond spend the night with us saturday night. Kaden, the 7 year old has really started to like to carve when he is over. He loves the Texas Star. We made him a boot jack, for his new cowboy boots, on saturday night. Sunday morning he wanted me to draw a star on a board so he could carve it. I was quite surprised at how well he did. below are some of the pictures of the progress and the final results, before we had a chance to put any finish on his star. He wanted to take it home with him, even though we did not get to add a finish to it.

It took only about an hour an a half for him to do this. I am proud of him.

You're a good grandpa. It's something you'll both remember. I have grand kids around the same age & they're becoming interested in carving. Lots of fun & good times.

He is adorable and he looks so proud. I have 13 Grandchildren and one of my grandsons is learning to carve.

In the third pic I noticed how he sure knows how to hold the tool properly.

thanks everyone. We spent a lot of time on technique. I think that is why he is liking it so much. The right technique shows results a little faster.

Start them young and they will be better than we ever thought about being. Great hobby for a kiddo...keep it up with him and you will both profit.

I have a grandson coming 10 who is interested in carving. Any suggestions as to what I can get him to carve? I have lots of wood and lots of carving tools, but at a loss as to where to start with him. Any suggstions are more than welcome.
