I was looking at paintings of eagles....they do not use black much...only in areas where you want an extremely dark area like the eyes. They used a dark grey to separate the different feathers. Next eagle look at paintings on the internet images of eagle paintings to see what colors they used for real-looking eagles may help out. It looks very good, but I do not think that is the look you wanted less carved and more real.

It is a good piece of work in it's own right but I think I see what you mean with your comment.
Just a suggestion. How do you think it would look if you used a super sharp fine scriber or a very fine tip Dremel tool to add fine detail to the feather sections. I think the detail would break up the larger white sections and define the smaller ones to get you closer to where you want to be with it.
