Some of the carving supply places online also have wood. Try the Wood Craft Shop in Bettendorf Ia. Good folks and lots of things to carve. Moore's roughouts is another source,. Lots of them out there. Heineke also has excellent basswood. Good luck, have fun, and ask lots of questions here!

I used to get basswood from Heinecke but recently found Northern Wildwoods to have excellent quality and cheaper...even cheaper shipping.

There is a large difference in carving from good quality wood to lesser quality. Found cheaper basswood on eBay but the quality was poor. No doubt, quality basswood is far superior to the lesser quality...in my opinion.

Look for a carving club near you... may have better luck finding good quality wood... on line stores are useless, they usually sell old wood that is too hard or punky. Just my two cents worth..

In my opinion when it comes to buying quality basswood there is only one name you need to know...Heinecke. I buy all my basswood from Heinecke Wood Products and have never been disappointed. They will cut any size you want and however much or how little you need...no minimum order. Great people to work with...their service is excellent. They are not online. You just call them on the phone (715-822-3524). And I'm not a paid spokesperson!

Another thing I like about Heinecke is that you don't pay up front, they send you a bill when the order is shipped. I don't mind paying when I place an order, but their attitude toward their customers is reminiscent of years gone by, and I find that refreshing. It's one of those things that doesn't have a dollar value attached, but is of value to me nonetheless.
