Carving tree branches

During my continuing search through different websites, trying to learn more about carving, I came across the Art From The Bark website. On their gallery, one of the photos shows characters with long noses that look to have been carved from small branches on trees.

Can I ask what type of carving this would be called? I'd like to find out more if possible.

Nifty idea! Seems like "stick whittling," rather than carving to me. Someone should know though. Thanks for sharing that.

I had to work with a couple of those = they had their noses into everything
but their own business.

i have some similar samples of that style, from a book simply labled Whittling... past time on a porch

honestly, i thought these types of things are what is lumped into the catagory of "Folk Art"

It definitely falls into the "Whittling of Twigs and Branches" category. I suggest that you attempt to obtain a copy of Chris Lubkemann's, Whittling Twigs & Branches - 2nd Edition.

I've had the first addition of the book since I originally started whittling and it's a lot of fun.

Hello my first post here and new to carving. My avatar is my first two attempts at caving, Thank You Bob K and Doug Outside. So not to stray from this thread is Lilac or Mulberry good to whittle? I have a Lilac bush that needs to come out next spring to make way for a woodshop/carving shop and a few volunteer Mulberry trees that need to go. Is this wood to hard? Thank You David.
