Three years stationed in Japan and I can't ever remember the sakura blossoming. My only excuse is that we most likely weren't back in homeport at the right time. However, there was no shortage of the cherry blossoms in their culture and art.

We have a few Sakura trees at my work in the Netherlands as well. I think next week they will start to blossom. They blossom for a week or maybe two tops and attract a lot of people. Hanami is the actual Japanese word for watching the Sakura tree blossom.

Working in DC for 18 years, I saw the cherry blossoms blooming every year - really beautiful. Had a major brouhaha when a couple of beavers began cutting down the cherry trees for food. Some wanted to protect the beavers; some wanted to protect the trees. Park rangers finally live-trapped them and took them to another area.

I traveled to Japan a lot in my youth, but it was always summer or holiday New Year. So never saw the blossoms. I stay in Toyoko for about a week then hit the train up to the farms in Utsunomiya for a month or so.

I did two years at ONI and OP-92U at the Pentagon. Still didn't get to see the cherry blossoms. Being the Cold War the **** Russian subs kept us on 12 hour watches. After three days of those the cherry blossoms were the last thing on my mind.

Glad it worked out best for both the trees and the beavers! A sensible solution.
