Thanks, at first it looked like a fox. I am not sure how to do the feathers. It started out as a simple owl, but trying to do it like another owl this person did the \"Sleepy Owl\". Since I only have a knife to do the feathers. Any help would be very appreciated.

just a series of tiny vee shaped cuts like you have up on the forehead, only smaller, laid out like feathers or fish scales.

I wonder if some simple piercing with a stab knife , to get vees would do the trick... experiment on a scrap piece.

It is a keeper Ron, I mean it, put it up on the wall, put it in a box, put it on a shelve, put it in a draw,but be sure to keep it. You got the right to be proud of your first carving. . .JoeB

Thanks, but it has been promised to my granddaughter. she loves owls. I learned a lot carving with only a knife. Will have to add some more tools latter as I can get funds. It was a blast, I really enjoyed doing this. Being my first really carving, I used a simple design to start with and then look at other pictures to finish it out. I know all the mistakes are but that does not matter to me since it was my first. Why did I wait till age 54 to start carving? And the adventure continues...

Your Grandaughter will be really tickled. time for her to develop a display shelf for the future carving gifts from Grandpa !! I bet there will be more than a couple...
as for later on, keep all those you carve and do not give away, store them up. they will give you good reference for more of the same carving later on. you will be glad you kept them and it will also show any progress of future carved.
