What would everyone\'s recommendation, for a beginner woodcarving project, would be?

I\'m still looking into getting tools, but if I have a project in mind, I\'m sure I could find the right tools, as there seems to be so many.

My recommendation is a simple relief project that you clamp to a bench or work surface and carve with both hands on the tool. This will allow you to learn about grain direction, wood response, etc.

pallin\\\\\\\'s right. Don\\\\\\\'t fall in love with it. You need to see the kinds of tool marks and the pressure needed to produce them.

Something else to think about = there are many different styles of wood carving. Many are the titles for parts of this WCI message board. I say this because the selection of tools is a little different, sizes and shapes, for each of them.

I advise prospective new carvers to search as many pictures and styles as they can and choose the ones that appeal, then start looking for a project and tools.

At the same time, start asking around your district for a carving club. That\'s a window of opportunity for tools, styles and techniques that\'s a real accelerator.

Also is the wood selection. To start with, I would suggest Lime. After you feel comfortable with the way your able to handle your knives, try something else. . . JoeB

If you want to do caricatures, get Jack Price\'s book and do some \"little guys\".

Thanks for the advice guys. I apologise if I\'ve already posted this, but the pc went funny, when I pressed post. So I\'m not sure if it went through or not.

I think I\'ll start with whittling, as that\'s one style I\'m kinda used to (it\'s been awhile, since I sat on my grandfather\'s lap, whilst he showed me how to whittle)

Though I am interested in chip carving, though I feel that at this moment in time, it\'s a little beyond me.

As for the nearest wood-carving club, sadly the nearest one, will take me roughly 1hr30 away (I have to cycle everywhere, don\'t drive)

If you want to post a link, do NOT use the link button, the forum software will add a pile of useless stuff that breaks the link. Instead, copy the text from the location bar of the page you want to link, and paste in directly into your post. It is that easy!
