    Great points, one and all! In fact after reading Ed's reply I told some one that had me whittle a small Dolphin that if they wanted it painted purple they would have to do it. Two reasons: I don't have any purple paint, and my shaky hands and poor eyesight. I am to the point that while whittling gives me great pleasure, painting carries too much of a risk to ruin an otherwise decent piece. I like to see the wood anyway. I am doing the triple dip process of finishing. First dip wood conditioner, second dip stain, and third dip Deft.

    This reply is not too close to the original post, but it might be of help to other old and shaky carvers. I now must train myself to just start over if I break a piece when whittling, rather than super glue it.
