Carving on the Road

Very nice carvingstation and it looks like very easy to transport. Is it heavy enough to stand malletwork (better without the tool shelf or they will fly around)?

For many years I loved carving outdoors on the road.I this travel setup that I took fishing and camping. I work great in a camp ground or on the banks of a like or river. Useing a Jawhorse , one of my favorite tools, as the foundation of the unit. It folds up in to a small package that fits easily in iny car.

Interesting stories! After retiring in 1996 I travelled nearly full time, so my travel kit is similar to what I use at home, except for the power tools like a bandsaw, tablesaw, 6 x 48 belt sander. Our travels were in a 30' fifth-wheel rig, so I wasn't confined much. I usually carved outdoors. The carving time was mixed with backpacking, cycling, and kayak touring, so it didn't require much space.

I keep my tools in an art box from Hobby Lobby. Wood cutouts in an old briefcase I used to take to work... This is on the balcony of a timeshare in Palm Beach, FL.

I used to carve in rhe car while my wife was driving until she decided she wanted a Chevy HHR. Such a downsize from a van, I wasn’t going to take a chance of cutting myself. Now, I only take my carving stuff when we go camping.

$8.00 gear bag from Dick's Sporting Goods holds my wood and my tools I decide to take on vacation. Extra pockets hold the strop, carving glove and pencils. I re-purposed the top of a printer paper box for a lap chip catcher. Works pretty well!

Nice travel group Ed. I have had a nice7"x9" box case that has work well but I am going to a larger " briefcase size" container for a travel case. I have drawn it up but have not started on it yet.

Hey, Randy, I had an old brief case that I carried for years in sales. After retiring and starting to carve we traveled the states in a 24' trailer.. I used a cookie sheet for the inside scrap holder and had 5 small palm knives. Now I have my big shop almost done and when I do get out, I have a small box and that old sales case.
And Rodster I do like you mess kit! But what is that funny looking white patch with blue and red writing on it,,,, ha ha.

Here is my 'Whittle Travel Kit'. All the tools fit into the Herschel bag shown below. I take it with me on holidays and to my daughter's house when I visit. If I pack a couple of 1" x 1.5" x 4" pcs of basswood. I'm good for the weekend. Unfortunately, the wood doesn't fit in the bag.

The sophisticated black device shown in the lower right picture is a pencil sharpener. Don't leave home without it.

It’s in a carport so a quick sweep and done. Carved last week with the Pelican Wood Carvers Guild nice group about 30 carvers present. Includes homemade cinnamon rolls and coffee. Nice group.
