I will sometimes use an old pillowcase to catch chips when carving in the \"living area\" of the house. I keep it open with a cross-stitch hoop.

my wife complains about me smoking, not cutting the grass in time, forgetting to brush the dog, but never complains about chips. guess im lucky but you have a great idea there

My entire workshop has become my trashbag for my style of carving. The whittling motion with a 1" skew makes the chips pop off in all directions. Amazes me how the chips get tracked all over the house. I sort of hoped that the carpet on the stairs would catch the strays but no such luck.
I sweep enough so my chair/stool can roll. Once in a while, I use a snow shovel to bag up most of what I can see on the floor.

Ingenuity is the mother of invention, and that is ingenious. I just use an old throw blanket over me in my recliner...get the odd stray but it catches 99% easily. When I am done just roll it up and go to the flower bed and add to the mulch. Of course it helps that I have tile floors in the living area.

Sounds like a neat trick. I'll have to give that one a try since I like sitting on the couch and carving and the chips are usually everywhere when I'm done.

Well, I didn't really know what to call it. I have been looking for a way to carve indoors without a mess, and rigged up a way to do it.

Take a LARGE trash bag. See the seam? Cut down the seam until you are about 1 foot from the bottom corner. This will make a little pouch in the corner, leaving the rest of the bag a flap. Put the pouch between your legs, so you can look into the pouch. Take the flaps, and tuck them under your knee (like the arm pit of your legs). Doing this, you will now have a pouch on your lap, that is held securely. It is cheap, easy, and the chips dont stick to the plastic like they do cloth. You can just stuff if up and put it in your pocket and chips come out of the pouch easily.
