I have learned that getting the profile right goes a long way to having people recognize who you are carving. To that end I now use a stencil to help me get that critical starting point right. I also use pictures of a subject or copies of a silhouette and other pattern to to get the shape right. in my case I use a Print Shop program to size the picture to fit on the the piece of wood I am using.
