Female form carving

That is the problem her profile is spot on but the nose isn’t right to my eye. I think I may embark on a practice series of small busts of specific people working on noses and I need to get better at lips as well.

I think the female form and all the lovely curves they provide are made to show off the grain. Certainly a symbiotic relationship.

Client is happy with the progress photos so guess I need to get over it.

I agree with you..It's the nose,..and the lips??? would have to see the model first, .but I can not tell you what is wrong with it by looking just at the photos other than something is not right. At this point, I would not mess with it to see if I could improve it. I have these issues big time also...it does not look right but the reason why is the bigger question? The worst thing about the body is you slightly get something wrong or a micro off...it does not look right. I am a major critic of my own work, it is never good enough...and times I need to let it go and go on the next project with hopes to do it better. The very best thing about this one, almost everyone can not see anything wrong with it and that is what counts big time plus the client is happy...you could not ask for more at this point. At least you know what you need to work on ...so that is a major step in the improvement of your future work. Pat yourself on the back you are almost done, and everyone is a happy camper....which is all that matters in the end. You sure in heck picked a super hard project!!! this time...body twisted in all directions, "an anatomy nightmare" is what I called it, LOL...but you pulled it off. Great job on that one..so go celebrate.

Absolutely, every carving in my home has flaws that 90% or more of the people who look at them don’t see. While the longer it sits on the mantle more apparent they become to me.

I guess the bottom line is the client being happy.

I’m certainly pleased with piece overall and will not be losing any sleep over the nose.

Ed, what a great job, love the grain, it's is really a work of art.

So she’s in the basement letting the tung oil cure.
Then a little poly to seal her up.
After that I will use that shiny new bandsaw to remove her from the base.
Then finish carving her feet.
Finally attaching her to a mahogany base and cylindrical post.
