Beaver Craft tools

Am looking at a short stack of 3 and wondering if anyone has used any of tis companies tools?

I don't think they are very good. Handles are too short and usually need to be sharpened extensively to be of any use. I have sharpened them for others in my club and wasn't impressed.

Makes me a good deal then ,, Ha, the price sounded good and I was justa thinkin, And I do not need to sharpen any more than I have. Just spent 0 dollars today.. Thank you sir!

I don't mind buying poorly sharpened tools. I expect that I will put the bevel and the edge on that tool that I want for the carving that I will be doing. That means their steel treatment is a big deal to me. This isn't just judgement. I have a variety of bevel angles that work well.
Even if the edge was OK, I will be tuning it up in less than an hour's work.

If I repurpose good steel blades, I don't hesitate to drill out and bash off the factory handles and make the handles that suit me, that fit me and that are a pleasure to work with all day.

Is Beaver Craft steel finished well? Do you buy shoes too small?
Bash off the handles and make something that realistically fits you.

More and more blade smiths here are using the bandsaw blade steel from gang saws.
Six feet of gang saw blade for knives and 6 feet of 1" truck leaf spring for adzes will be a lifetime supply.

I think beaver craft is pretty good as far as the steel and edge retention goes. The size handle is very typical for Ukranian Czech, or russian folk art carving. they are bigger than palm gouges we use here. I believe that all these companies should offer the tools unsharpened, unpolished and without handles. They should focus their efforts on forging or rough grinding with precision.

After seeing Tatiana Baldina chip carving in her videos and buying her book I recently bought the 3 different style of Beavercraft knives that she uses for chip carving, (though she does also use other manufactures) and have found them to be excellent quality. I have found that using the skew chip carving knife a lot easier on my hand than the ordinary knife (which she describes as an American knife, and is one of the 3 I bought) the 3rd knife I bought was what is described as a geometric knife, though Tatiana calls it a hatchet knife.

He is so careful about what he says...it is almost funny. You have to go to the point of,... what is he not saying? Although he did show the top-of-line chisels he uses. I do not think that has changed at all over the years. He is a top world-class woodcarver. If I had to guess what his opinion is by the way he is acting, and body language and these remarks I did not think I am going to say it... that he does not like them but good if you do not have money to pay for the good ones.

The fact is that for his knives the author uses the grade of steel y8. This steel is good for soft woods. In the old German reference book on steels there is a description of steel grades suitable for woodworking, one of these grades is U12A, the letter "A" means that the steel is improved.

Dileon, I don't think he's implying that these tools are as good as the best, but that they are nonetheless good tools. If you watch him regularly you'll know that the manner of speaking that you refer to is his normal style. I don't find that he's dancing around and being purposely vague, that's just the way he is.

Actually, the company is from Ukraine, which is distinct from Russia where he was from. Both countries were part of the now defunct USSR.
