  • Tools and translation

    Hello everyone,

First sorry for my mistakes while I write in english.
My name is François, I'm 34 years old, I'm french and I just decided to get into woodcarving.
My girlfriend bought me great tools and a nice book from Fox Chapel publishing. Unfortunatly, I miss some tools.
    I especially need :
    - 1/4" veiner
    - 1/8"" V-tool
The problem is that I have no idea how to translate this, especially about the sizes. I may looking for translations or informations I can't find these tools.

Can someone help me please ?

    Thanks.
    Hi from France.
    Best regards.

1/8" is ~3mm, 1/4" is ~6mm A veiner is u-shaped at the cutting edge, and a v-tool is v-shaped. The dimensions are measured at the top of the cutting edge, the maximum width.

                Here's a post from 2011

"Think the letters of the alphabet "U" and "V". That is pretty much all there is to it. One (supposedly) creates a sharp channel in the wood whereas the other creates a more rounded one. I used the word "supposedly" as not all tools sold as "V" tools have a pointed apex. Also there are varying degrees of the "V". For a more graphic explanation checkout Woodcraft under the Pfiel brand. They have charts that show the different profiles. Also be aware of a little difference in the European and American labeling of gouge sweeps.

It is a trifle daunting at first, but you'll soon get the hang of it all if you stick with it. No genius required.

                L.P."
