  • Diy v-tool & skew

Hi everyone. I made this v-tool and skew from 5/32 music wire. The handles are fir hand planed into a tapered octagon. The v-tool still needs a tuning up, but is already cutting better than I thought it would. I made it by putting a long angle at the end of the rod, filed it with a triangle file to make the wings, then sharpened the outside. I'm going to try a gouge next using the same method.

I actually bought some 5/32" music wire to replace some broken springs in the seat of my ancient (1970) Chevy truck. I laugh when I say ancient- that truck was built during my last year of high school! If I do use the O1 tool steel I bought, it'll be for bigger tools. I (fortunately) already bought the full set of Dockyards.

K&S Precision Metals is the manufacturer of the music wire I got from my hardware store. It comes in 3 foot lengths of various thicknesses. You have to go to a real hardware store though....not lowes or home depot.
It was originally used in pianos and that is how it got its name. It's tempered high carbon spring steel. Good stuff.

I went to a shop that caters to hobby builders, like radio control airplanes, to get mine. Even the big box hardware stores don't carry that, as mentioned. My youngest brother made a fixture and bent that wire into shape for the truck's seat springs. I've had carpal tunnel release surgery on both hands, and they're mostly better, but he cranked out that wire bending like a machine. #Bender

There was another wire list on Amazon, I just grab one to give another site to look for wire. What do you remember for the wire type?
