    Dave, Thanks for the response. I saw that in the other carving magazine and did try it but did not stay with it. A friend at the carving club had me put a black mark on my knife blade and run it across a flat stone and when it did not wear even then suggested I do that to even the blade for honing. Is that how he does it with cardboard?

      Been a while since I watched the dvd, but I think he just uses the cardboard for small tools like Dockyard. He only used the sawing motion for knives on a stone. A guy that works at the local Woodcraft store swears by the sawing motion, when he teaches sharpening he uses that technique. I guess it's just what you are used to.
