What are your opinions of the Warren Cutlery blades?

They are all sharpened by grinding a second bevel on the edge. This reduces the ease of cutting in wood. Look at a Helvie or Cape Forge blade and you will see the flat ground blade taper all the way to the cutting edge. This is called a flat grind and it is better for carving.

I have a number of Warren blades, and while I primarily use gouges in my carving, I have been very pleased with Warren.

I learned to carve using a Warren blade set. I've made a number of knifes with their pelican blades and concave, hook blades and while they are not my "go to" knifes, I use them quite often.

I really like the hook knife for doing eyes.

I don't care for the knife blades, gouges seem ok. (IMHO)

After X-acto I moved up to a Warren set with one handle and multi blades and quickly began to set their blades and gouges into my own handles. Then I discovered Pfeil and then the joys of making my own blades. Long story short, I see nothing wrong with Warren blades or gouges.

I've used warren blades before I started making my own knives. If I were to make a knife with premanufactured blades, I would choose Deepwoods Ventures or OCC blades. Just my opinion.

The gouges are ok. I don't really like changing blades all the time, but they hold an edge well. As for price they can't be beat. Where I live there is lee valley... Or mail order from the net. If you want to try carving the warren basic set of knives plus a couple add on gouges is a good start. Then f you get hooked always buy the best tools you can. I personally want to see the tools before I buy so I'm always at lee valley. U still use the warren v tool and bent #7 that came with the set quite often.

I was just reading a book (basic wood carving I believe was the title) it said something that made me sad. It said that warren blades are disposable and meant to be chucked out rather than repeatedly sharpened/honed. That is not how I use mine and I'm fairly happy with em

I've been using 2 pairs of Mora #171 Equus hook knives for years. Rebevelled from 30 degrees to 12. Very tough and durable. If you can get the hook rebevelled, very useful.

However, there's a caution stamped into the blades: "sharpening weakens the blade"
That's all the encouragement I need to see if I can break them. Nope. The blades are hafted with 2 cutlery rivets, no adhesive. I pull hard enough to loosen the rivets.

I like the Warren blades but I do grind the bevel so that the blade is flat. Doing that, some stropping and works great. Holds edge well. Just have to be careful when grinding that you do not over heat and lose the temper of the blade. I know folks do not like the Warren handle but it fits my hand well. Next step I am looking at is the making your own handle. Probably something along the lines of Allen Goodman handle shape as that fits my hand pretty well. A lot of the knives out there are fine blade wise but the handles are too small around. I know you can put tape on etc but I do not find that satisfactory. May also give OCC blades a try. Not into the grinding and shaping at this time that some folks do.

I have used the blades to put in my own handles. While they are not in the same playing field as Deepwoods blade. I really like them, a good quality blade for a very reasonable price. My favorites LN3 and LW6
