    There's the two sorts: the microplanes and the saw rasps. I don't think that the microplanes are robust enough to last very long. I've got some microplanes that I use in the kitchen but don't think of them as being useful in wood carving.
    The saw rasp OTOH, will give grandpa a run for his money. I can see those in use to finish a saw-cut rough-out with some rounded edges. I'd rather use a big crooked knife. The rasps don't cut well in very short strokes but the crooked knife can do short and long.
