  • Another Option For Flexcut Handles

These are 1-1/2\" wooden craft eggs married to Flexcut interchangeable woodcarving tools. The wooden eggs have a 3/8\" hole drilled in the small end of the egg. The tool is then carefully forced into the hole. It forms a very tight slot and can be removed and reinserted if necessary. 5-minute Epoxy can be added to the hole at a later date if required,The eggs are then finished with stain and varnish. The cost of a 1-1/2\" wood egg is less than a $1.00 each. The cost of a Flexcut wooden interchangeable handle is $12 to $15 each.

Tom.... I\'m not quite sure what you mean. Basically what you see is what you get. I\'m one of those dang fools that when I first got into carving years ago I thought I was going to need almost every tool Flexcut made. Every time I started a different project I figured I needed a new tool. Well.... those tools have been sitting in my drawer in protected cases out of sight, out of mind all this time and I end up using what I have out even when one of the others would actually be a better choice. During my last visit to SMWC\'s I did purchase a set of three Flexcut handles for around $30.00 or so but I\'m too old and too cheap to be putting out that kind of money for the remaining 15-20 interchangeable tools that I have. I\'d had wooden eggs in mind for some time but the eggs that I\'d picked up at SMWC were just a little too big and uncomfortable to hold for carving purposes. Then I stumbled across these 2.5\" eggs in JoAnn\'s. I had a 50% off coupon so with little to lose I gave it a try. It worked like a charm. There was another 50% coupon in the paper today so it looks like I\'ll be making another trip this week.

Well Eddy, I just thought that since they were eggs, they might hatch into something else. Forgive me.
That is a great idea, and look like they would be nice and comfortable. I do like the feel of flexcut tools......Tom

That is a dollar wise idea Eddie. Do you have them epoxied in to the egg in the photo or are they friction fit? Big A+ on the savings.

Re: Another Option For Flexcut Handles

Kadiddle... I do not have them epoxied at this time. I very carefully \"forced fit\" them into that 3/8\" hole so that they formed their own slot. They didn\'t go in easy and they didn\'t come back out easy but the fit is tight enough so at the present I don\'t see a need to permanently epoxy them in place. Perhaps when I have the other 15 or so tools also mounted I\'ll consider doing it.

JoeB... Sorry, SMWC stands for Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers. I don\'t know where you\'re at but if you ever get near the Great Smoky Mountains you need to set some time aside to visit them in Townsend at Nawger Nob. They\'re good folk, have a large selection of carving tools to choose from, and they\'re prices are competitive. http://www.woodcarvers.com/

I got six coming . Over a long period of time I\'ve accumulated 36 blades and seven handles, never enough handles, this will give six more at the price of let than one Flexcut. Thanks JoeB

Re: Another Option For Flexcut Handles

You can also split a piece of wood dowel and shave the halves down a bit to fill in the voids when epoxying the tool in permanently. One other thought is to shave off one side or two opposite sides of the egg and insert the tool parallel to the flat. The flat will keep the tool from rolling around on the table or bench, and possibly off onto the floor or your foot.

                        Good job Eddy!

JoePB... That\'s the other SMWC. I have no doubt that Mac at Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers is a God fearing man but I don\'t know how much he\'s got to do with the women\'s college. I hope that you purchased the correct sized eggs. The eggs that I bought are the Darice Craftwood 9ii9-64 5PCS/PKG 2.5\" 6CM SKU 082676011511

Good suggestion Bob although I don\'t think that you\'d have to worry about filling the hole completely up. If and when it comes to it I plan to fill the hole about half way up with epoxy. The tool will cause the epoxy to rise even higher and the tool itself has a hole at the end which will give the epoxy something to grab onto. I don\'t think it will go anywhere.
