  • Question: what is a sweep blade used for?

Hey folks! I have a question that I hope y\'all will be able to help me with. I am in the market for some knives and was curious as to what an up sweep style blade is used for? Im looking at a 1-1/2\" Lyons knife offered through little shavers which features an up swept blade. I typically whittle smaller caricatures, just to give you an idea of what I do an whether or not this knife would be beneficial to add to my tool box.

    Any info is appreciated! Thanks

Re: Question: what is a sweep blade used for?

Welcome to the forum WS.. I like an upswept for taking off a lot of the wood, but I prefer a straight edge for doing my detail work with.
An upswept also works good for cutting off the saw marks on the bottom of a carving....Tom
If I took the time to fix all my mistakes, I wouldn,t have time to make new ones.

Take a look at the http://woodbeecarver.com/category/knives. Don seems to love the upswept blade for slicing cuts. Snoop around on his site for lots of carving info.

The usefulness of the upswept blade in your carving may only be answered by trying it. Many whittlers find it helps them to learn to use slicing cuts. My personal favorite is a double-sided blade, curved on one side and rather straight on the other.

I have a small (less than 1 in) up sweep knife called the Mini-Pelican by Flexcut. I use for stop cuts for small detail. I have some other larger up-sweep knives that I use for the roughing out when start a new carving. pallin is probably right, each of us carve in different styles. . .JoeB

Thanks for the advice guys! I think I\'m just going to get one and try it out. Has anyone ever ordered from little shavers? I called but got no answer so I left a message. Is this typical?

            Thanks again

Rick from Little Shavers passed away a while back. Several knife manufacturers offer up-sweep blades (sometimes called a scimitar blade). Helvie offers some (I have one), Allen Goodman makes several (I have one), and Don Mertz has some - there are others...
