That reminds of the the tool he makes in this video. I've been thinking of making something similar (without bronze castings). It would need to be slightly adapted for holding carvings.

I could see doing it as a glue up of a light coloured wood on top of a dark wood, the light wood for the head, highlighted with dark gel stain, dark wood for the background, incised chip style with the swirls and brought out with a light coloured fill in them...

If you own a bandsaw you can make those 2" blocks into 1" blocks. Personally, I would carve something bigger with the larger blocks.
