^ It's true. Most finishes are flatted with silica, which scatters the light. That reduces specular reflection (and thus the shine), and the silica isn't clear. I do the same thing with clear and a final coat of satin.

Beauty being in the eye of the beholder, I'm sure that someone already thinks it's beautiful. That is one nice bit of work, in any event.

I believe it. I made a batch of easels for the art class at our local senior center. If I ever do another batch, they will be unfinished. Sanding and two coats of shellac were easily 3/4 of the labor.

In the metal machining industry, the concept of "surface feet per minute" applies. With metal, the parameters of the speed and amount of material removed are well established. Maybe there is a place on the internet that covers that for wood, but I seriously doubt it, so you'll have to determine...
