    Patterns or drawing yourself

    Hi, I was wondering, when you prepare to carve a Christmas ornament etc. do you use a paper pattern or do you just freehand draw something? My problem is that I can’t draw very well and I have a hard time finding paper patterns to trace from.

    I apparently was not clear in my comment. What I meant was- if a few strokes on cardboard (charged with compound) do not produce a sharp edge, I start over with a few strokes on DRY 800 grit sandpaper. The strokes on the compound are always the final steps in the process. For all steps it is essential...

    Pallin, if you end up using the 800 grit emery cloth, do you use it wet or dry? And do you apply compound to that?

    I will be using the green compound on the leather belt and white compound on a buffing wheel. Robson Valley, if you start to see black on your belt, is that an indication of leaving it on the belt to long?

    I had that same problem just this morning. I had to paint the section to be glued in order to seal the wood so that the glue would stop melting into the wood.
