Yes the jig holds the blade securely for sharpening and shaping, Works very well and the hands are well away from the blade.

Scraper Blade Shaping
I am posting some pics of jig I made from unknown tropical hardwood. Hardwood taps and hold threads very well this project. I used 1/4-20 for this jig. I routed a slot to hold the blade along with a bolt in the back to pinch the blade. This has worked very well on my 1x30 sander thinning the bevel form...

Brian, your lucky you use the hoof knives which have a narrower width than the scraper blades, even if I reduce width I'll still have 2 1/2 inches that I epoxy into a slot on one half of the handle. I should have done more shaping before glue up, next one I'll do more shaping before gluing....

The floordot blades are advertised as high carbon steel.Various carvers have used scraper blades but people have thinned the 30 degree bevel to 15 degrees. I made 2 handles one with the factory edge the other with a thinned edge. I am a rookie carver so take this evaluation in context. Using basswood...

Tang size for new blades
So now I have a few blades from scraper blades.
The personna are about 5/8 wide, the floor dot blades are closer to 3/4. What is a good size for tangs ? If I dont reduce the width the knife handles end up too wide and clumsy looking.
Thanks for any help

I smoothed out the bevel transition, I also had a personna blade to compare. I know I am rookie but after attacking 1.5in square basswood, I have a hard time telling the difference between factory and modified edge. They both shave end grain, when I start carving some caricatures I guess we'll see....

Yes, I am mistaken, the blades are .036. I'll try and smooth the bevel transition and see. If this is successful I shape the blade to a useful shape. Nice knives, my handles will be walnut.

I just got an email from the MFGR bevel angle is 30 each side, seems pretty steep for carving. What do the veterans say ?

Scraper Blade Bevels
I just got the 10 pack of floor dot blades. They are.065 and sharp. Do you change the sharpening angle and try to flat grind the blade. Trying to flat grind a thin blade will be a test of patience. What are the drawbacks of using the factory edge. These blades are10inches so I can get at least 2 and...Last edited by mike swindell; 07-01-2022, 01:40 PM.

Those knives look really nice, I found a hook knife on Ebay for $2.50 supposedly Swedish. I'll just play with the shape. I did just receive my Personna floor scraper blades, I haven't measured the thickness but they are flexible and friggin sharpe. Mike

This is a very old thread and I'll chime in. Virtually all woodworking type forums have a classified ad section for members to post tools, wood, etc. This forum seems to have a large base from all age groups and having a classified section could help members thin out their herd and even help new members...

Carving Knife from a Boning Knife
I was over ambitious and trying to start a knife sharpening business from home. I accumulated quite a selection of old forged steel knives from Chicago Cutlery, Ontario, etc. The boning knives I have a huge hollow grind as do most of the other knives I have. Should I send this out to get it ground flat...
