I do not know the carver, from the sounds of it he is a true gentleman. If you can't find him, I might be able to help, especially since if involves the next generation of whittlers. Can you post a pic of the knife?

Hi Brandant. If you don't mind sharing, I'mm looking for information on rivet material. the folder I modded was a kit, mild steel pins for the moving parts (lock rocker and blade pivot) and brass for the stationary ones (spring and scales)
Moving forward I'm thinking of a scratch made folder,...

FrankJ, check your PM please. I could use a little folding knife advice if you don't mind.

Tip on the glue fill- stain the sawdust first. You could use elmers, epoxy might be better.

FrankJ, in your post about my pocketknife score you mentioned you used to make folders from scratch. I am just finishing a kit knife from Rough Rider, a lockback I modified the blade shape on.

I'm looking at making a new folder using an existing blade blank, any tips you'd care to share?...

FrankJ, I did not get the box, which is OK by me. This is a carry knife for me anyway, one of a few. I'm thinking I need a little display....

  • Wow, what a tough question.

Harley Refsal describes flat plane whittling as doing more with less- trying to suggest an eye without carving an eye, or mouth, or whatever. I'm looking at one of his figures- three cuts define the sides of the nose, the cheekbones, the eye sockets, the eyebrows...

Alpha O, staghorn handle? Nice! Been drooling over a staghorn out of Sheffield.

Pallin, most surprising thing about the factory edge on this one is it is approaching scary sharp.

Can you slice a thin piece of white oak and wedge it in? Or maybe a couple pieces? Put them is so the long grain will show when you are done. Clean as much glue or gradoo as you can out of the slot. Use something like epoxy or gorilla glue.Don't shape them until the glue has dried- then you can...

Did I mention you should get some instruction?

The lathe is one of my favorite tools, but is is DANGEROUS if you don't know what you are doing. there are so many things you can do wrong, and it is so simple to avoid...

I carry (most) of the barlows I've picked up, all get a good cleaning and reworked edges. This one will be no different. I grew up near Camillus, and all the hardware, feed stores and lumber yards had a Camilus display on the counter. Almost every pocket knife I've ever carried has been a Camillus....

I sit down with a knife and a bit of basswood, and a cup of coffee or a beer. Next thing I know, an hour or more has gone by, I'm surrounded by chips, and I haven't touched my beverage.

    That's why I whittle.

    Scored a new pockeknife today

Found this on Ebay, I regularly search there for Camillu knives, and barlows in particular. Every once in a while a real beauty like this one comes up- it's a late model, maybe pre 2000, that has not been touched. Factory grinds, scratch free bolster & blades, snaps like a new knife. I paid a...

    30x magnifier

I bought one of these little clip on 30x magnifiers for my smartphone- cost me less than $4 at Amazon, stuck it in my stocking so i could be surprised on Christmas morning. Man it works. I don't take pic with it (usually) but I do use it as a little portable microscope, especially when knifemaking....

  • Folder mod update

Boy I'm slow. Finally got the folder riveted together- you can see the rivets are rough and high. I kept looking at it and playing with it, trying to think of everything I wouldn't be able to do after it was together. The blade picked up some magnetism, I had read that a dip in boiling water would...

  • One thing I did not see in any of the descriptions which I consider to be part of the definition- knife in one hand, piece of wood in the other. It rules out large works that need to be held down, furnture, etc.

Wikipedia adds the following: whittling is mainly a hobby and not an occupational...

Wayne, I find that some pens that run if you apply finish shortly after writing do not run if you give them some more time to dry.

Personally, I use a Bic and apply water based urethane. I don't think a good pen would make my handwriting any better!
