Could be a variety of reasons. Hard wood, cut direction, knife condition/ sharpness. Hang in there. Do you have a local carving club in your area? You could get some hands on help there. Welcome to the forum.

I have the Flexcut set and have been satisfied. They can also be used in the RG handles and used for hand use, like palm tools.

I plan on keeping safe and carving every day. Our club attendance has dwindled to about 10 middle aged carvers. Our oldest is 101 and says he is working on the second 100s. I usually carve them from butternut and use several thin coats with a lite smoothing between coats. Paper sack for this step works good. Hope this helps.
