I very rarely carve a log that don't have metal in it and when you do hit metal and its too old to pull out like this had to be 100 years ago but still tore my chain up. That looks to me like a job for a small skew and or hook skew, you know what the pros use to do pattern type relief carving. Celtic knots and such not my thing but I have watched it done...

This is what I do and not good for all carvers, I carve mostly live oak its hard not the hardest ever but still hard. I do mostly use power tools and chainsaws but I can and do use full size tools. I am a big fan of the second bevel and in my case its on the inside edge. If you go with this method...

The thing about power carving is mostly the "bits & burrs" that actually do the work. I think you will be fine with most any brand of motor and all the one mentioned here are fine. Make sure to post pictures of your work we love that....
