These are all good tips, but you should cut a piece of the same wood you used for your carving, carve a few details in it and paint it like your carving. Then try out some of these methods on this one first to see if you like the outcome. I speak from experience,...

Well thank you all for the warm welcome and advice. Yes safety IS my mane goal while teaching my nephew. I have been a millwright (mechanical maintenance) for over 30 years, and believe me I know how important it is.
