I will sometimes use an old pillowcase to catch chips when carving in the \"living area\" of the house. I keep it open with a cross-stitch hoop.

Well, it really depends on what you are carving (or want to carve).
I don't use a large #11 often. I do find the smaller sizes handy for texturing.

For me, The drop downs (Our Magazine, How To, etc.) are in white letters and do not show up unless over a darker area.
UPDATE - it appears to be an issue with my work computer and an old browser. Works fine at home.

There are still some tweeks needed, but it gets better each day.

Johnniez - As Robson Valley mentions the wood has pores. The endgrain is open pores and the sides are more closed. Therefore any darker stain will be held in the pores on the ends and even drawn into the wood more there than on the sides.
