I know. I was trying to ascertain what the OP meant, but re-reading it looks like he actually wants slip stones made of Aluminum oxide.

I was going to say Rick Wiebe, but it looks like he no longer carries tools. Lee Valley carries some and if you talk to them, they will order any tool you want from their suppliers. I've ordered Henry Taylor from them in the past. They also carry Hirsch. They are very good to deal with. By that...

There are some compounds that are mixes of abrasives. Many green have stuff besides Chromium Oxide. I've played with most. I keep coming back to things like Tormek PA-70, Simichrome, Autosol, loose AlOx powder and loose SiC powder. I don't like waxy gunk on my strops is the reason I tend to avoid...

I think I would clean it as others have suggested and then give it a very light coat of renaissance wax. If stored in a temperature controlled environment the thing really isn't going to get dried out. It will adjust to the ambient humidity level. Forget about "nourishing" the wood, or...

When getting into narrow width tools and you want to do a fishtail they must be short pod, or the advantage just isn't...Last edited by fiddlesticks; 04-27-2020, 05:58 PM.

They are a blatant copy of Pfeil in looks. That is certainly no accident. They are however from all reports I've read, decent steel. My only Chinese carving tools are the Master Carver which are not up to the fit and finish of Schaaf, but I'm sure their steel is as good as it's as good as Pfeil,...

And in 2020, the Ramelson site does not have an SSL cert which is very poor practice. If I wanted to order something from them, I'd find it on their site and order only via phone until they get their website properly secured for e-commerce....

Not a straight line tip, but for the smoothest curves with a v-tool - I always use a mallet. Light taps work very well....

Well, I don't think anyone will disagree. A flat chisel takes no skill to sharpen though compared to a carving gouge....

For sure. Generally I prefer stones, but for really small tools, tight V tools, etc the sand paper really comes into it's own. Also good for large scale steel removal. Can work much faster than some stones. Stones are nice because they don't ever rip. For me sandpaper wears out fairly fast ...
