I tried a couple of projects with Palo Verde but found it without grain and very hard to carve when dry.
It did, however, make a really nice mallet and the newly formed branches make nice toothpicks.

Simply amazing. I find it interesting how you could easily modify your initial lettering issue and come up with what appeared to be Plan B and Plan C. Great job
Saw this on Facebook and had to also respond here

That pic would make a great carving reference but then again, you would be thinking about the problem all the time
Hope you are feeling better and get back to carving soon

still wondering how the lettering will be addressed? Curious take on the "carvers white out" - used that myself on occasion. Looking great so far

Try Kettle Moraine Hardwoods. I know that they didn't ship as of several years ago but they have a store south of Milwaukee. they not only mill Basswood but other exotics that you might find interesting.

On most woods, I've been able to "soften" it ia bit by spraying with a 50%/50% water/alcohol mixture

If, as you say, your tools are very sharp, try making your cuts cross-grain. You will need to make shallow cuts but the method works out well. You cannot always make your cuts with the grain so you sometimes need to improvise
