Getting back into carving with a Ringneck

Heinike will cut whatever you want, it will be nice carving basswood, they will have it to you fast, and I have found them hard to beat!...

The sides are acrylic texturing gel, with a piece of comb drug through, the head and back are the gel, with a sponge texture.
It is fun stuff to play with!

I usually just saw out my own blanks, but for this first one I ordered a blank from theduckblind.com.
I was very happy with the basswood he used.

I am not sure how much they really need to look like a duck, as I have never tried the rag style for a duck. It might be like fishing lures, they don't need to fool a fish in order to sell, they just need to fool a fisherman. I would bet there is some of that in the decoy industry...

I am not sure why, but I have been a year without carving. While setting in the duck blind with my son, we got to talking about getting some ringneck decoys. I have never carved a full size duck, or a gunning decoy, but I figured it would be a good project to start back up with, after all, the ducks...
