Well it's sat there at the moment waiting to have the outline transferred on and I can get chopping. Life is shouting louder than carving at the moment.

To be honest there is a delineation almost in where they have chewed and where they haven't and I thought of having that piece off on the table saw....

Treating woodworm in carving wood
A friend gave me a nice piece of oak to play with which I brought home. However, I noticed some woodworm holes along one edge so stuck it outside for now. Is there any treatment I can put on it that will not ruin it for carving? I wondered if steam would do the trick. I haven't seen any signs of activity...

I use vet wrap off Amazon with a layer of leather inside and even then the corner of my Flexcut has penetrated enough for me to feel it.

It is held in the grounds of a world renowned stately home, and as such they milk you for cash as much as they can. My friend stands there for about 10 days near Christmas every year at their craft event. It is outside in tent like structures, no heating allowed, and if you want a source of electricity...

Hi Carvingbarn, I replied to this on another forum but for the benefit of this board here it is again:
I didn't go despite being next door to the event, literally! It was held at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire as part of their fair/country show. The only problem being was...

Slow down folks! I haven't carved that, it is something I would like to carve! I do take the point about sharp tools though, I keep my Pfeil gouges nicely hones, and yes, it would be a case of small chips, nice and steady.

Got some horse chestnut wood - anyone got any tips?
Had a large piece of chestnut given to me, and I fancy having a go at this because I have a yen for folk style carvings:
Any tips or advice?...

To be honest I was doing a lot of it with a #2 Pfeil gouge, 20mm wide, and every 15 minutes or so it was necessary to do a bit of a strop session. You could hear the change in tone of the wood as it was being cut. Some of the wood was very stringy, some carved like incredibly hard wax. I think carving...

Claude as soon as I can get my sweaty hands on some lime I will be doing. I don't know why but I found the scooping out of the leaf on one side with a #9 gouge to be hugely satisfying, perhaps because the wood carved so smoothly.
Anyway, thank you all for your encouragement, I will no doubt...

My wife asked if she could use sandpaper to smooth the edges, the "carver" in me responded "no, it's all about the finish from sharp tools!". To be fair, when I was roughing out the background I very nearly took the dremel to it to save time :-)...

Noobie share - NOT a Chris Pye!
Okay so I finished my first carving, an oak leaf, and whilst it's a crime against nature I'm quietly satisfied because I literally sweated buckets on this. I have good tools, Pfeil, but it's still in that horrible stringy canary wood which crumbles on some edges and is just a down right pain.
