Having just said we don't get much in the way of tornados in NZ we got 2 mini tornados a couple of days ago and a few people lost their homes. Nature does have a way of giving us a bit of a shake up from time to time....

Howdy wdcarver
I would use some very fine CA glue and flood the cracks with it. It will suck right down into the finest crack with a capilliary action. I would leave that for a day or two to harden right up and allow all solvents to be evaporated before using the epoxy...

Howdy BWG
Basswood is wonderful to carve so grab some off that as soon as you can . Pine well not so good. Have attached a photo of an Africa scene I did so you can follow the following bits and pieces.

Thanks guys am getting there slowly. weather is getting colder now and the hands are starting to sieze up a bit but not too bad. Am just doing an hour or two a day at the moment. Had hoped to have this one done by now so I could have a go at something with a bit less fine detail and a bit less delicate...

Claude is spot on with his last comment. Grain can vary a lot in the ease with which it cuts so change the angle of the cut until you find an angle that works best. If the flat plate steel shaver is the one I think it is which is basically a piece of slightly flexible tempered steel plate about 2mm thick then yes I use them quite a lot.
They are very good for removing varnish from old reclaimed wood and I have used them...
