When I was looking to carve Olaph for my grand-daughter, I went here, https://rigmodels.com and did a search. They offer 3D 360 views. I took screen shots of different sides and printed them off. They have humming birds.

I believe it is basically an honor system as I don't think they keep track. But the rules state:
Novice - basically you have not won more than 5 blue or red ribbons in the novice division and have been carving less than 3 years.
Intermediate - Division for those not wanting to compete in...Last edited by PHolder; 04-07-2022, 07:39 AM.

It seemed to be a good crowd. Hard to tell since it's my first. I was told 125 carvers entered 1073 carvings in competition....

So sorry to hear of your loss. We lost my 15 year old buddy last March. He was a mini Schnauzer and just a good natured fellow. I still miss him. Sometimes I come home from work and look for him to greet me when I come in the door.
When we lost him we remembered how pitiful he was. As...

So you were at the Charlotte Showcase? Where are you from and what club are you a member of? Did you win any ribbons?
I was able to meet Blake Lunsford there. Saw him walk by stopped him and chatted with him for a few.
I had Helvie sharpen my knives....

Looks good! I have done one carving in Butternut. Carves nice but you do need to be mindful of the grain. I carved a stylized bear in butternut and finished it with Tung oil. Oil helps the grain to pop....

First Showcase - Won Some Ribbons!
I hope this is OK. I entered a few carvings in the Charlotte Showcase this weekend. This was my first entering any carvings. I ended up winning a few ribbons. Pretty excited with myself. At my age I get all of the affirmation I can.

My club teaches the following:- Dip in BLO - allow that to soak in. Then wipe off any excess. Don't wad up your BLO soaked paper towels. They can combust on their own
- Apply several layers of thinned acrylic paint in the desired colors. 1:15 - One drop of paint to 15 of water. With it being watered

Yes, I raised the back of the blade a bit and added a micro bevel. My question was where carving books will tell you to remove the bevel and have a chisel edge. At least in my case this seemed to make the edge too fragile....

Thank you.
I bought a set of knives when I started that did not serve me well. One developed a hook in the middle of the blade, another the tip bent after doing a stab cut. This is all on basswood. I got the OCCT knives because the price seemed reasonable and they seemed to have a good following....

Question about stoning knives.
I have 3 OCCT knives that I've had for about a year. They've been regularly stropped using a Dunkle Strop and Dunkle dust. One knife got something on the edge where it looked like I tried to cut wire with it. The others were getting smaller nicks in the edge as well. Time to stone and strop.
I...
