If you go with either of these, I recommend getting several replacement cables. There is a learning curve, and you will break a couple of cables(flexshafts) starting out. I have a MasterCarver, have been using it for 3 years, and it is great. I have it hanging from an IV pole and use the foot control...

These knives were used by Pattern Makers as markup knives. I have one I use for carving quite a bit. You can still buy them and various length, width and thickness blades are available. I cut my spare blades to different lengths and have several different shaped blades that I swap in and out. Originally,...

There are some excellent power carvers on Youtube. I would watch some of their videos and see what can be done with just a few burs. Do a search on Youtube for power woodcarving or carving woodspirits. Harbor Freight has a large box of diamond burs for cheap. They are good for cleaning up your ...

I would go to the sawmill you mentioned and get a cedar log, red cedar would look the best when finished. 12-14" in diameter as tall as you want it to be - 20" maybe. The cedar will carve very nice with your gouges. Get a longer log and you'll be able to do a couple of them.

When I shipped a lot I always used the USPS Priority Mail and their free boxes. I would place an order on the web site for various sizes and they would deliver them to my house FREE. There are free envelopes too.

I go to the Nature Coast Woodcarving Club's December show in Citrus County, and then any others that I hear about as long as its not too much traveling. Are you East or West Coast, or central?
