Basswood most likely would be better, but it sounds like it is grain direction that is your problem. Try laying out your carving (animal) so that the direction of grain is running up & down the legs. If this causes problems with the tail, then you can always gule a piece of wood on the animals...
Been smiling all day ... the weather is great, went grocery shopping, worked on the wood pile, done a bit of carving and tonight I'm going to participate in a zoom carving meeting..... it don't get much better than that

I used to use epoxy on the eyes, but then I stumbled on gloss glaze called "Triple Thick" manufactured by Americana. Seems to achieve the same results, with no mixing or odours.

The earth has been going through cycles since time began. 15,000 or 20,000 years ago there was an "ice age" , then the planet started warming up ( did the ( the scientists) blame that on global warming? ) I think not. Before that , there's evidence of tropical animals and vegetation in areas...
