Re: naming the business
As an artist, you are the brand. So I recommend using your name (first, last or full name) in your business name/website.
Listen to to what JenW said. I've been operating for a while with a generalistic, non-specific business name, and although...

Re: MI Wood Carvers Assoc Event
Joyce, I'll be there teaching. If you've never been, it's really quite an event. I had a blast last year and I'm looking forward to this year.
Marcy, try twisting harder.

Re: Alabama woodcarving retreat
Hi Carol,
I'll be doing quite a bit of traveling in this year in May and June, but the closest to your area that I'm currently scheduled for is Maquoketa, Iowa for the Woodcarvers Congress. But if you could round up a few other carvers I can come...

Re: Carving Seminars in Alabama
Hey Derrick,
Doing a DVD on carving the human head is not something that I've considered doing before. I'll have to write that down and come back to it a little later.
In the mean time, you can go to my website, and on the classes page...

Re: Seeking Advise/Suggestion
Are you wood-burning on a relief carving? If you are doing it on a relief carving, I think that I would try carving a texture and then stain it. The texture would catch and hold the stain and if done right, will the look of the brick. One of the characteristics...

That'll be fun if you can make it Don. I'll try to live up your expectations better then your last class experience that I saw you talking about.

Re: The Orca have landed.
Hey Butch, nice work.
How well does the sycamore carve with hand tools? I've never actually carved any, but just recently I got a hold of a couple of large ( apox. 20" diameter) sycamore logs that I can't wait to start cutting on. Of course...

Re: Tools for relief carving
Hi Bill,
Here's my list of basic/favorite tools for relief carving. Of course the scale that you are/will be carving in is a huge factor in how useful a specific size of tool will be.
#2-12mm
#5-10mm
#5-3mm

Re: Southeastern Woodcarving School 2012
Instead of doing a friendship cane and quilt for the raffle, this year we're a Shawn Cipa style noah's ark.
It'd be great if the school got that much attendance, Steve. Right now we've got 49 students signed up....

Re: Bumps in the background
I use a #2 or #3 (nearly flat) gouge. The sleight curvature of the blade allows you to make cuts without the corners of the tool digging into the wood. Yes it will leave tool marks, but by making light shaving cuts, you can create a nearly flat surface.

Re: Alabama woodcarving retreat
Hey Don, that'd be great if you could make it for this year's retreat. The dates for this year are September 15th-20th. More details to follow soon.
At Oscar, one of my students last year was from California, so just hop on a plane and...
