I was using a pistol grip It's workable but an inline would be much better.
Unless you are a contortionist the pistol grip tends to get in the way on shallow cuts

Thanks again for your comments. I really enjoy doing deep relief like this. The thing that still bugs me is that I haven't found a good way to tint (and lighten) the wood. Any ideas would be appreciated. The layout is from Philip Eck's book "Custom gunstock carving"...

I'm back. I was laid up for a bit The book you are referring to is pictured below along with gunstock carving book that has the patterns that I have used for my first two stock carvings. The book on the left explains how to carve gunstocks with knives, gouges, and a few home-brew...
